“Chiropractic is Cost-Effective in Treating Chronic Back Pain”

The above is a direct quote from a headline that appeared in of all places, the November 17, 2005, Medical News Today. The article, also picked up by UPI news and several other sources, was reporting on a new study published in the October 2005 issue of the scientific journal, The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT).

In this study 2780 patients with mechanical low-back pain referred themselves to 60 doctors of chiropractic and 111 medical doctors. These cases were reviewed for effectiveness of care and for costs. One of the articles noted that back pain care in the United States alone is estimated to reach $48 billion this year, and, at any given time, 80 percent of the U.S. population suffers from back pain.

The results of the study showed several interesting facts. With regards to the outcomes, the study showed that both the acute and chronic patients showed better outcomes in pain and disability reduction and higher satisfaction with their care after undergoing chiropractic care, as compared to medical care.

The costs of the care for the medical and chiropractic showed different results depending on the usage. Without adding the costs of any over-the-counter drugs, hospitalization, or surgical costs, when you simply compared the costs of in-office chiropractic to in-office medical care, the chiropractic care was slightly more expensive. If you then add in the additional costs for any referrals made by the chiropractor or the medical doctor, the chiropractic care costs for chronic patients were then 16 percent lower than medical care costs.

The authors of the study, noting that the satisfaction for the chiropractic care was higher, and the overall total costs were lower, made a concluding statement urging more chiropractic utilization in the health care system. They stated, “With their mission to increase value and respond to patient preferences, health care organizations and policy makers need to reevaluate the appropriateness of chiropractic as a treatment option for low-back pain.”

The February 2003 issue of the research journal, The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, (JMPT), published a case study of a 49 year old man who suffered from chest pain. The patient was a music composer
and was exercising on a treadmill during part of his regular physical workout routine when he developed a dull and achy chest pain with some difficulty breathing. The patient did not seek immediate help for the condition, thinking that it would resolve on its own.

Over the next two weeks the pain increased and the patient sought medical care. A visit to his internist revealed the patient’s blood pressure to be 140/97. He was diagnosed with muscular chest pain, secondary to tachycardia (rapid heart rate) and hypertension (elevated blood pressure). Treatment was a prescription of a combination of anti-inflammatory drugs and beta-blockers. The patient felt that his beta-blockers made him extremely drowsy, and the anti-inflammatory drugs did not relieve his chest pain.

In spite of the medication, most all of the man’s problems seemed to worsen. After extensive testing, all findings were deemed normal, and the internist declared that the patient’s heart and lungs were healthy. Over time, the patient’s symptoms had progressively worsened to the point that the chest pain radiated sharply into his upper back as well. The pain was so severe that he was unable to sleep at night or perform simple activities of daily living without increasing his pain. Anxiety over the severity of his condition also began to affect the patient’s emotional well-being, and got to the point of precluding the patient’s active employment and most physical activity.

Finally the debilitated man sought chiropractic care. His chiropractic examination showed an increase in many reflexes and the conclusion was that the man had subluxations. Chiropractic care was initiated at that time. After only one session, the man immediately rose to a standing position after the chiropractic adjustment, he then took a deep breath and exclaimed that he could breathe much easier.

The patient was placed on a program of sustaining chiropractic care, initiated 3 times per week. The study showed that the patient responded favorably to chiropractic, obtaining prompt relief from his symptoms. Sustained chiropractic care rendered over a 14-week period resulted in complete resolution of the patient’s previously chronic condition, with recovery maintained at 9-month follow-up.

The Annals of Internal Medicine recently published the results from a survey that consisted of 232 people who had arthritis and were under a rheumatologists care.

Of those:
-63% responded to the survey by saying they were using some form of “complementary care”

Of that 63%
-31% were using chiropractic.

These numbers may themselves be grossly under reported as only 45% of the patients told their doctor about using the other forms of care.

What this basically means is that over 19% of the public who is seeing a rheumatologist is ALSO seeing a chiropractor. The thing is, less than half of these patients are telling their doctors, which means the number COULD be twice as high.

Possibly the most impressive statistic was that 73% of those trying chiropractic found it helpful.

The reasons given why people said they tried the non-medical care was to control pain, because they heard it helps, because it is safe, because it helped someone they know, and because their prescription medication wasn’t working.

Problems of Obesity

Even if you are not a person who is highly health conscious, it is essential that you keep a check on your weight and take appropriate steps to keep it in balance. Remember, along with obesity comes several health related problems such as abnormal cholesterol levels, heart problems, joint weakness, etc. So even if you are not planning on taking up the workout exercises for trimming or shaping up your body, it is essential that you include at least the basic workouts into your daily routine. It is obviously worth it to spend the few minutes per day to keep your body fit and healthy, thus to increase the longevity of your healthy life. In addition to this, the workouts will enable you to be more self-disciplined and in fact, make you fall in love with yourself. Apart from the workout exercises, you can also be additionally cautious about your eating habits if you are over 35-40 years. All physicians will state several valuable points in favor of practicing workout exercises.

It will be highly beneficial to realize the possible benefits of including the workout exercises into your schedule. This will in turn prompt you to get started with at least the simpler workouts. First and foremost, exercising will help you be guarded against the common ailments which creep into your middle age. For instance, joint pains in ex-players and individuals having the risk of hereditary heart problems and diabetics can reduce the chances or at least postpone the health ailments if they are involved in the workout exercises. What can be a better gift than staying trim and healthy even in the olden age?

As any physician worth his/her salt will insist, women need to exercise at least a little as their bones tend to become weaker with the onset of age (above 40-45 years). Apart from this, the chances of women struggling with obesity are more probable than men facing the trouble. If you are still not completely convinced, chat with a family member or friend who is overweight; they would narrate you all the health and psychological problems they have to endure.

It is an undeniable fact that most of us will be careless when we start putting on weight. It is natural to be not worried about losing those extra pounds when you are happy and satisfied. It is also obvious that you will start eating more than your routine. But remember, it will almost take double the time for losing those unwanted muscles, provided you are strict about your diets and workouts. But otherwise, if you are a regular exerciser then you are sure to be conscious when you gain weight suddenly and this will help you stay in control of your body.

Even if you are not comfortable about working out the exercises regularly, you can always choose the simple yet equally effective walking, jogging, and cycling. Nothing can be more pleasant than going for an early morning walk and warming up yourself for a fresh day.

Finding the perfect Insanity With Shaun T takes time and effort. The P90X Plyometrics Mat and the P90X Workout is another great workout that will help develop flat abs.

It’s the season for sickness – getting flu shots, kids’ asthma acting up, and ear infections plaguing the preschools are a common scene right now. These ailments are painful, and the necessary treatments for each can be very costly. Prevention can be the key to getting through the season a bit healthier.

The Massachusetts Chiropractic Society (Masschiro.org) believes that prevention is the key to health and wellness, and can provide some tips and guidance on health care maintenance for families this upcoming flu season. I’d recommend checking out their website to learn some more.

I want you to consider the following:

- In the U.S., asthma cases have increased by more than 60 percent since the early 1980s. Researchers don’t know why cases of asthma are increasing at such an alarming rate. Some say genetics and environmental exposure to allergens play a role.

- Asthma is a chronic disease; it can’t be cured – only controlled – and many people say chiropractic care can be helpful in treatment results along with care from an asthma specialist and primary care physician.

- Ear infections can be painful, difficult to treat, and account for more than 35% of all pediatric visits. Standard treatment is with antibiotics, but repeated doses of antibiotics can lead to drug-resistant bacteria in which case drugs do not help. More parents are turning to chiropractic care to help with chronic ear infections.

Some preventative tips to aid in keeping health this winter season are as simple as hand washing, using air filters in the home, and adding supplements of vitamin C.

Everyone wants to grow old gracefully. Some people even go as far as going under the knife to get that youthful look while others opt for a more natural way to maintain that healthful glow. The easiest way to make peace with age can be found in the types of foods that we eat and by paying attention to the miracle ingredients that they contain.

This hidden miracle is called antioxidants. You’ve probably seen articles written about them in everything from the pages of magazines, medical journals and every product from hand cream to supplement pills. But do you really know what antioxidants are and what can they do to keep you looking your best?

Antioxidants are substances that fight the aging process that goes on in your body. They are not produced by the body so to get the benefit of these power-packed substances you must ingest them. A variety of foods contain antioxidants.

Let’s go back to the beginning. The body continually replenishes its cells. Through a process called cellular metabolism, the body produces energy, more cells and repairs any damage. One by-product of cellular metabolism is unstable molecules called free radicals.

Free radicals are molecules that damage your body. They are unstable because they are missing an electron. To get another one and become stable, free radicals will steal electrons from cells. That theft damages the cells in a variety of ways.

The results are visible and invisible changes to our bodies. The development of diseases like cancer, diabetes, arthritis and neurological deficiencies may begin to affect you as you age. Also, thinner skin wrinkles and brittle bones are a problem. Free radicals enter our body from outside sources as well: cigarette smoke, radiation and the sunís UV rays. The more free radicals we encounter, the greater the damage that can be done.

Antioxidants have been shown to be of great help in the free radical problem. Antioxidant substances combine with free radicals and neutralize them. Once they are neutralized, they can no longer do any damage. Scientists donít have any idea of a recommended daily dose of antioxidants to correct free radical damage and the diseases that come with age, but they do know that eating foods rich in antioxidants makes a huge difference in how we live.

Where do you find antioxidants?

They are all around us. Look no further than your local farmerís market or produce aisle in the grocery store. Fruits and vegetables contain the principle sources of antioxidants.

Examples of antioxidants include:

* Vitamin C

* Vitamin A

* Vitamin E

* Lutein

* Lycopene

* Beta-carotene

Certain minerals like zinc and selenium also function in the body. They are not antioxidants but they boost the immune system to fight against free radical damage.

Antioxidants are also found in nuts, legumes, cold water fish, seafood and red meat. So, eating a varied diet of fruits, vegetables and the foods just named will increase the amount of antioxidants in your system and help reduce the incidence of disease.

Eating fruits and vegetables in their natural form instead of juices brings the benefit of other nutrients found in the foods. Juices also contain a lot of sugar that is not needed by your body.

Food does more than stave off hunger. Natural substances found there can cause us to live longer and stay free of disease as we age.

5. Salmon- Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids reduces the risk of heart disease and other conditions like atherosclerosis. Wild salmon is a fatty fish but it contains good fats that has been proven to improve health in children and adults. Salmon is rich in protein which is of great use after an exercise session to build muscle tissue.

Eating is one of the single greatest things about life wouldn’t you say? I mean, there are so many great foods out there. What’s interesting about this is that our body gets its nutrients from these delicious foods.

Sometimes we all have gone overboard with our eating habits and it has probably resulted in gaining some weight. We’ve all been there so don’t worry. One potential issue with food is emotional eating.

The roadblock that is considered “emotional eating” may end with the scale but it begins with a thought. It seems like stress runs rampant throughout our lives and really is starting to take a toll. This is when your defenses start to lower and your health takes a hit and this leads to another problem with your emotions.

We all have our good days and our bad days. It’s the way that we deal with the bad days that brings emotional eating into play. If we choose to look for comfort we often choose food as the answer. It’s true that food won’t judge you, hurt you or tell you no.

To make the issue even worse, eating pleasurable foods can stimulate the release of endorphins just as exercise does. So, after you finish chowing down on that bag of chips, you still have a sort of a high.

Emotional eaters often use food to relieve issues caused by stress. These eaters often hide behind food instead of actively looking for a solution to the real problem. This is not uncommon when the stressor is something such as horrible of physical abuse or a death.

So, the real question at hand is: “How do I know if I’m an emotional eater?”

Well, the first sign is a fairly obvious one. You will gain weight if you eat too much. If you currently have been gaining weight, you need to ask yourself these questions:

* Have you been under stress lately at work or at home?

* Has anything traumatic happened in the last year?

* Are you dealing with a problem but haven’t found the solution?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it could mean that you are an emotional eater. You eat but you are not necessarily hungry at the time. The foods that you choose are what we like to call our comfort foods:

* High fat foods like French fries, fried foods

* High carb foods like macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes

* Sugary foods like ice cream, donuts, cookies, cake, and for me personally Reese Cups!

The great thing about this is that there is help for emotional eaters.

The first step, as always is recognizing that you have a problem. You’ll experience feelings of helplessness and guilt.

Secondly, seek counseling. There are many types of counselors out there that can meet your need. Emotional eating has nothing to do with dieting or changing your eating habits, it all has to do with taking control over your emotions.

A counselor might suggest things like visualization, practicing problem solving skills, relaxation techniques as well as family support.

Visualization helps us see your problems in a realistic way and not blow them out of proportion(we get to choose how much a problem affects our life). You will also learn to see food as proper nutrition for the body and not as much as an emotional crutch.

Thirdly, your family or friends can learn how to identify your stress triggers and can then be on the lookout for changes in your eating habits. They can help you become aware of the foods you are eating, assist you in making healthy food choices and have these friends exercise along with you. Workout buddies always help.

Having a proper diet and taking the time to exercise daily increases your immunity, blood flow and also greatly increases your positive thinking. Yoga is another way to enhance your mind/body connection and is a fun way to stay in shape.

Exercise is such a vital part of our lives. There are so many benefits to exercise that there really is no reason for me to beat around the bush. You just need to get out there and exercise. Staying in shape is a simple way to increase your life expectancy. Weight bearing exercises are important as they increase muscle mass and bone density as you get older.

The majority of us have learned what to do when it comes to exercising, however we often forget to do it or just don’t make the time to get it done. With a busy lifestyle, making time for exercise is a challenge and we’re all busy so there’s got to be a way.

Weight bearing exercises aren’t just for bodybuilders as you may have thought. As we get older, especially once we hit the age of forty, our muscle mass starts to decline. For women especially, bone loss becomes a problem. When the body is in need of calcium, it starts to rob it from your bones and that is not a good sign. You can combat this by starting to build muscle, as it not only increases their mass but your strength.

Here are five easy toning exercises that can be done anywhere and whenever you have time. These can be done at home, at the office, or on vacation, you can do these extremely effective exercises pretty much anywhere.

The Bridge- Butt Lift sounds like a plastic surgery technique but it is an easy way to tone your buttocks. All you need to do is lay down with your feet flat on the floor, with your legs shoulder width apart. Place your hands, palm side down, on either side of your body. Pushing with your feet, squeeze your gluteal muscles and lift your butt off the floor. Hold the position for a count of five to ten seconds and then release down to the floor.

Squats- Squats work the butt, the hamstring muscles as well as the quadriceps. If you aren’t sure of proper form, you can use a chair. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and feet firmly planted. Push your butt back as if you were preparing to sit in a chair. Keep your abs tight and your upper body straight. Once you reach chair level stop and hold the position for a count of two to five and release. At the lowest point, place all of your weight on your heels for balance and maximum toning.

Reverse Lunges- Lunges work your quadriceps. The lunge can be a difficult move for people who have knee problems however. A reverse lunge still tones the right muscle groups but puts less pressure on your knee. Stand with your feet together and arms at your sides. Take one leg and move it backwards until you are in lunge position: front leg bent at a 90 degree angle and back leg extended until you are on the ball of your foot. From this position, all you need to do is lower yourself down until the back knee almost touches the floor. Hold for a count of two and return to starting position.

Pushups- This is a classic toning exercise that works all areas of the arms along with the chest muscles. If you aren’t comfortable or strong enough to perform a pushup on your toes, you can easily lower your body to your knees. Be sure your arms are tucked into the body and your back straight as you lower and lift your body. Try to look out in front of you a little while doing the pushup for maximum results.

Crunches- Abdominal muscles can be worked every day to build strength and muscle tone. Lying on the floor in the sit up position, lace your fingers behind your head. Squeezing your abdominal muscles, lift your upper body until your lower back is about to come off the floor. Hold for two to five counts and return to starting position.

These five exercise moves can be done whenever you have some free time. The best thing about exercise is that its effects are cumulative. Even five or ten minutes at a time will work to your advantage.

I’d recommend doing some of these when you wake up in the morning or right before bed. Early in the morning produces an added energy boost throughout the day for you though, so keep that in mind.

Have you ever been in a situation that all of a sudden brought on the sweats, a rapid heartbeat and/or a shortness of breath? You probably weren’t having a heart attack but instead you were most likely having an anxiety attack. If you suffer from anxiety disorders, learning to manage your anxiety is the first step to overcoming it.

Anxiety is characterized by extreme reactions to fearful situations in which ways are out of the ordinary. If someone was to follow you into a dark alley, those anxious feelings of a racing heartbeat and sweaty palms would give you heightened senses and a rush of adrenalin that can potentially save your life. This is known to many as the fight or flight syndrome.

In the cases of having frequent anxiety attacks, the fearful feelings are from dreading a particular situation and not the actual situation itself. If you were to get caught in traffic, an anxiety attack could happen over what might happen when you get to work late. Starting a new job is another way that can bring on anxiety attacks. You don’t know anyone at the new job and the fear of that unknown can send you into a panic.

Don’t worry though because everyone experiences panic or anxiety in some ways. Like the fight or flight example, it can save your life. In new situations, we get panicky but when the outcome we fear doesn’t actually happen, the anxiety disappears. For someone with chronic anxiety, this is just not the case.

You need to remember that every situation that brings anxiety is not life-threatening. More than likely it is an extremely stressful situation that has brought on the anxiety as a way of dealing with it. Unchecked anxiety of this type can lead to depression.

If you suffer from anxiety attacks or frequent anxiety disorder, there are steps you can take to keep your anxiety under control.

Steps You Can Take to Keep Your Anxiety Under Control

1. See a professional. This is always a good first step. Self-diagnosis of any type of physical or mental condition is unwise and can be dangerous. A professional psychologist can help you understand your anxiety and prescribe medication or other effective techniques.

2. Get a good night’s sleep. During the sleep cycle, your body repairs itself. You feel more rested after several hours of restorative sleep, reaching the REM stage. Most people need eight hours a night which varies within an hour or two each way.

3. Exercise on a consistent basis. Exercise helps you to use oxygen more efficiently. It helps to get more oxygen to the brain. It also increases focus which may help you see solutions to problems rather than simply worrying about them.

4. Meditate. Meditation is more than chanting mantras. Yoga is an exercise that involves quieting the mind and controlling your breathing. Simple mediation such as taking 5 minutes to clear your mind everyday can work wonders in the fight against anxiety.

5. Manage the worry. When you feel your pulse start to quicken, count backwards from ten. As you count, focus on the situation. What has actually happened? Resist the urge to read anything more into the situation.

6. Don’t use alcohol. You might think that the glass of wine is relaxing your tension but alcohol is a depressant. In anxious situations you could rely too heavily on it and gain another problem in the process.

7. Find some relaxing activities. Stress can rob you of your energy. On a regular basis, do something you like such as gardening, painting, reading or listening to music.

Anxiety can come into your life at any time. It’s a normal thing so no need to get worked up over it. However, if the anxiety becomes more and more frequent you could be at risk for more serious conditions. If you feel your anxiety is starting to take over your life or increasingly causing you problems, seek professional help immediately. There is no need to suffer this terrible condition in silence.
